Tee Talk: William Mouw's Octuple at the American Express – A Tough Day at the Office
Well, folks, the PGA Tour delivered its usual mix of jaw-dropping talent and head-shaking moments this past weekend at the American Express, but one moment stood out for all the wrong reasons. William Mouw, a rising star with a lot of promise, had a round to forget when he posted an octuple bogey at the 13th hole—yes, you read that right: an +8 on a par 5.
To put it bluntly, Mouw’s day was like watching a slow-motion train wreck. It wasn’t just a bad hole. It was the kind of hole that makes you question your life choices, your swing, and maybe even your decision to play golf on a Sunday afternoon. After a couple of errant shots, Mouw found himself deep in trouble, battling water hazards, thick rough, and what appeared to be an entirely new set of obstacles created by the golf gods themselves.
By the time Mouw took his eighth shot, he had not only lost his ball in the water but likely had a few choice words for his caddie (and maybe even the entire course management team). The crowd? Well, they’d given up trying to predict what would happen next and instead opted to just wait for the inevitable walk of shame to the next tee.
Now, I’m not here to roast Mouw—golf is a tough game, and even the pros have days where everything falls apart. But an octuple bogey on the PGA Tour? That’s a story you’ll tell for years. Hopefully, it’s a one-off, and Mouw will bounce back stronger, but for now, he’ll have to wear this one as a reminder that golf is humbling, no matter how much talent you have.
Let’s all give Mouw a little grace. After all, anyone who’s ever been on the wrong side of a double or triple bogey knows that sometimes, golf just happens.
So, here's to next week, William—may the holes be kinder, and may you keep your ball dry
